EXTERNAL MENTORSHIP

The External Mentorship Program is a mentorship program in which a WIB general body member or associate member is paired with a Brown alumna that can speak to the industry she works in as well as life after Brown. Potential topics to discuss with and solicit advice on from a mentor include summer plans, career paths, and academics. About thirty WIB members are paired with a mentor each semester, and applications to be a mentee are released at the beginning of each semester. Most mentees tend to have one external mentor throughout their time at Brown.

STUDENT QUOTES

What are some topics you’ve discussed with your mentor that you found helpful?

I was grateful to have met Georgia in-person in the past during professional events where our conversations were focused on recruitment, the structure of Morgan Stanley, and her experiences as part of the Wealth Management division. But as part of this mentorship program, we’ve been able to share more personal and candid aspects of our collegiate years and personal interests. For example, we talked about our passions outside of academics and pre-professionals clubs, she gave me recommendations on economics classes, and she advised me on my current situations with internships and related topics.

What is something that surprised you about the industry/career path you are exploring?

I would say the ample opportunities during the college years to get involved in a pipeline opportunity. As a first year, the mix of limited opportunities and a seemingly pressed timeline can be discouraging at times. But hearing each person’s unique journey gives me more confidence, especially as a Brown student, to explore my passions without too much worry about its impact on my professional trajectory.

What was the most rewarding aspect of the External Mentorship Program?

“I truly enjoyed the opportunity to connect with a Brown alumni as it was an opportunity not only to learn more about their career achievements but also hear from their experiences at Brown and how the school as been instrumental to their success.”
